MONOCOTS

A monocotyledon, or monocot, has only one seed leaf. A typical example is grass. Members of the onion family are about the only monocots raised in the greenhouse. The first leaf of an onion is like a spear. It doesn’t appear to be much different from subsequent leaves, which seem to rise straight up out of the first one. The first leaf does die after a while, turning to a sort of brown sheath out of which the next leaf comes.

Monocots also grow very differently from dicots. If you cut off their tips, even when they are very young, they will continue to grow; in fact, it may even benefit them. If you do the same thing to a dicot, it will die, or it may become a useless monster. Sometimes a tomato plant will lose its growing tip as a seedling or won’t develop one for some reason. If you don’t throw such a plant out, it may live for quite a while, growing thicker, especially at the seed leaves, but not much taller. It will never produce good leaves, blossoms, or fruit.

To clarify your thinking on this subject, consider this: If you mow grass or cut chives, the plant will continue to grow just fine. Try using the lawn mower on beans or tomatoes!
